Nassau grouper (Epinephelus striatus) spawning aggregations: hydroacoustic surveys and geostatistical analysis

چکیده
Reef fish spawning aggregations have gained distinction in terms of their importance in species conservation and their socio-economic contribution to many Caribbean, tropical western Atlantic, and Gulf of Mexico fishing communities. With the near extinction of many spawning aggregations of large grouper and snapper throughout the Caribbean, Gulf, and tropical western Atlantic, it is essential that we increase our ability to study and document the remaining known (and unknown) aggregations to provide baselines for their conservation (Sadovy, 1994; Sadovy, 1997; Sala et al., 2001; Colin et al., 2003). The Nassau grouper (Epinephelus striatus) is a commercially important tropical reef species that forms discrete spawning aggregations, typically around full moons from December to March (Sadovy and Eklund, 1999). Historically, spawning aggregations of Nassau grouper have occurred throughout the Caribbean, tropical Nassau grouper (Epinephelus striatus) spawning aggregations: hydroacoustic surveys and geostatistical analysis

Mapping bathymetric and hydrographic features of Glover’s Reef, Belize, with a REMUS autonomous underwater vehicle
We used an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) to survey bathymetry and water mass properties at Glover’s Reef atoll in Belize as part of a multidisciplinary study of population connectivity of Nassau grouper (Epinephelus striatus). Nassau grouper populations are declining dramatically throughout its range in the Caribbean because of overfishing. In response, Marine Protected Areas have been es...
متن کاملPopulation Structure and Phylogeography in Nassau Grouper (Epinephelus striatus), a Mass-Aggregating Marine Fish
To address patterns of genetic connectivity in a mass-aggregating marine fish, we analyzed genetic variation in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), microsatellites, and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for Nassau grouper (Epinephelus striatus). We expected Nassau grouper to exhibit genetic differentiation among its subpopulations due to its reproductive behavior and retentive oceanographic conditi...
متن کاملA global baseline for spawning aggregations of reef fishes.
Species that periodically and predictably congregate on land or in the sea can be extremely vulnerable to overexploitation. Many coral reef fishes form spawning aggregations that are increasingly the target of fishing. Although serious declines are well known for a few species, the extent of this behavior among fishes and the impacts of aggregation fishing are not appreciated widely. To profile...

متن کاملSpawning aggregation of white-streaked grouper Epinephelus ongus: spatial distribution and annual variation in the fish density within a spawning ground
White-streaked grouper (Epinephelus ongus) is an important fisheries target and forms spawning aggregations at particular spawning grounds. The aims of the present study were to investigate the ecological characteristics of annual spawning aggregations such as (1) spatial variations in the density of E. ongus at the spawning ground, (2) the relationship between fish density and environmental va...
